Birding at Henderson Bay

There are alot of birds that make their home at Henderson Bay, both at the beach as well as on land and soaring overhead. This page highlights the commonly seen birds here as well as a full list of birds that have been sighted and photographed at Henderson Bay.

Our resident Australasian Harrier or Circus approximans is often seen gliding around the place in and endless search of food while the sacred kingfisher or Todiramphus sanctus  can often be seen perched on the powerlines or out on the rocks at the beach.

Ofetn seen in the bush or on the coastal walking path along the cliffs the North Island fantail or Rhipidura fuliginosa ssp. placabilis will often keep you company.

Out on the beach the black backed gull or Larus dominicanus ssp. dominicanus can often be seen, at the edge of the tides, out sitting on the rocks or flying overhead while the  Northern New Zealand dotterel or Charadrius obscurus ssp. aquilonius has it’s own page as it makes it’s home here and is on the endangered list.  It can be found wading at low tide or up by the start of the dunes often in pairs.
